Located 22.5 miles into the canyon and approximately 56 minutes from Bakersfield. Park on the South side of the street if you are heading east it is before Boreal bridge. You can see the dome up the hill on the north side of HWY 178. This is also the parking for the MDC boulders. Cross country hike up the hill towards the dome. There is a four wheel drive and bike trail before the turn out that has a road that ends up behind the dome we are unsure if this makes access easier although the highway patrol doesn′t seem to like to see cars in turnouts here so be careful.
This area seems to have been developed in the early 90′s...

No Access issues accept maybe the legality of parking at the turnout and the possibility that The Kern Canyon can close because of rock slides.
Watch for ticks, snakes and loose rocks...
From Bakersfield take HWY 178 into the Kern Canyon approximately 22.5 miles. The turnout is just before the Boreal road turnoff.
* See area map for better directions.
This area is not gated. Parking at the turnout is questionable whether it is legal.
Their is camping in the Kern Canyon although it is HOT and Dirty. The company at the campsites is questionable as well. The nicest campgrounds around this area is China Garden a few miles before getting on the 4 Lane HWY just past this area
You may access this area one of two main ways. The first is park at the main turnout and just hike straight up to the area (bushwack). The second is to park at the turnout that is gated on the north side of the road just west of the normal turnout. This turnout is usually littered with mountain bikers. Their is a 4 wheel drive road that goes above the area and you may just hike down to the dome.
It is believed that Mike Garden and Mickey Dunagan developed this area. Please send us some history if you know any.
